  • Maizey

    Canine Behaviourist

  • Sesame

    All around good boy

  • I started my career in behaviour and training in 2017, at a reputable rescue charity in London. My initial 2 years were spent providing day to day care for the dogs, ensuring high welfare standards, and gaining invaluable insight into a variety of breeds (my favourite being bull breeds) and training requirements.

I progressed into the canine behaviour department; during this time I implemented training and behaviour modification programmes for a wide variety of behaviours. I spent time carrying out these programmes personally, continually improving my handling capabilities, as well as coaching and upskilling kennel staff. I was also key in maintaining and caring for the riskier dogs onsite.

Alongside rescue dogs in the UK, I have also spent time in rescues abroad as part of my on-going studies.

  • I have a level 5 CPD diploma in Canine Behaviour, completed to distinction standard - Completed in 2022 with The ISCP.

I have a level 4 Ofqual regulated, AIM accredited diploma in Canine Behaviour, Training & Welfare - Completed in 2024 with The DoGenius.

I am currently undertaking a BSc in Animal Science (Pet Behaviour & Welfare) at ARU Writtle; September 2024 - May 2027.

I have been continuously studying dog behaviour since 2020 - a mixture of taught online courses, self taught courses, university and other on-going CPD (webinars, seminars, conferences etc).

I am also currently working on the canine frustration masterclass, in order to further develop my understanding of the role of frustration in behaviour.

  • I apply a fear-free, reward based approach to my work, and strive to achieve the best possible results for my clients, without detriment to their dogs and their welfare. My practices are inline with up to date, scientific evidence regarding animal behaviour modification, and I continue to keep my knowledge up to date.

I work with my clients and their dogs to establish individual motivations, which are used to reinforce desirable behaviours. I do not use, or encourage my clients to use, aversive stimulus/pain to correct undesirable behaviours. Instead, I will look to explore the underlying motivations for said behaviours, and implement techniques to encourage and build on alternatives; also known as differential reinforcement.

Whilst not an exhaustive list, I will not utilise and will insist on disuse of the following:

Shock collars, prong collars, choke/check collars, spray collars, penny/rock bottles, spray bottles, intimidation, loud noises, hitting, handling that deliberately causes pain or fear.

  • Sesame is a Shiba Inu I adopted from rescue when he was four months old. He is a bubbly boy who loves food, toys, other dogs, training, and running free in the country side.

Sesame is currently in training to assist clients by being a stooge dog, and has successfully helped nervous dogs to build their confidence.
